thanks for joining us and welcome to St Joseph's High School's University application video for 2020 320 for today work out line for you the the process involved in applying for University for next fall for Ontario universe substance coming from an Ontario High School heading into Ontario University should find this very useful and informative by the end of this you should feel pretty confident and how to access resources to make sure you're making good choices also had to walk through the application process itself this is an example of a student's data sheet and it's a really valuable resource for you but also for your guidance counsellor we're going to be doing individual garage meetings meeting that literally you will meet individually with your guidance counsellor to go over everything you need to graduate this year and to make sure that everything that is as it should be and that all of the plans that you've made will ultimately lead you to graduation and to whatever post-secondary destination you have chosen so we will meet with you and you will get to take a look at this data sheet first thing that you're going to see on the sheet and the upper-left area is the current horses that you're enrolled in you're going to see the diploma and credit summary so that showing all of the required courses in whether you have met those requirements so for example have you done your grade 9 English grade 10 grade 11 and so on I will still have that grade 11 outstanding or pregnant grade 12 still outstanding so you'll notice I put a star there just to indicate that that shows that that person has not earned that credit yet and if you go to the very bottom it says credits to date so this individual has 20 for credit out of a possible are out of a necessary 30 so if you've done ate per year and you're in grade 12 this is probably what you'll notice so this individual still need 6 brand new credits not repeated courses but brand new credits in which graduate take a look at the middle column that shows all of the courses that this individual has learned throughout high school if you fail the class in your senior grades this would also show up in this particular call him now I've shaded out this the visuals at grades but where you see that blue shading you would see your grade and as well next to that you can see the date that it was earned and how many credits that particular horse was worth there's a diploma category but typically that's something that really only the office and guidance needs to know about but this should give you a really good view of all the courses that you've taken in your history if there's any discrepancies there it's a great time to bring that up with your guidance counsellor so do I'm sure that you're looking at over the other thing you're going to notice as far as graduation requirements is on the sheet it shows Community hours so you need to have a minimum of 40 in order to graduate those need to be submitted as soon as possible mrs. Berry please don't wait until June to do that in fact mr. Savelle this is going to make it clear he'd love to have those before or Wednesday after 2 starts till 40 hours of community service needs to be your osslt So Pro literacy requirement needs to be here as well so it should say successfully completed if it doesn't you and your guidance counsellor no. I've already spoken about whether you're going to take the test again or whether you were taking the olc course and then this year is an online learning grad requirement so for those of you who have taken to fully online courses you live met that new Ontario requirement for those of you who have not who have chosen for a variety of reasons not to do that online component that not a problem it's simply means that we're going to have a form that you need to have signed by you and your parent that just says that you've opted out of that required online learning component so I can a great resource when you get it please make sure you keep it your own records it's a great resource for you as well as your family to make sure you have everything in line for graduation in order to ensure that it's sort of a one-stop-shop we've made sure that the guidance website is loaded with lots of information for you and your family so please make sure that you are having a look at this website regularly for any updates and any information that you might be looking for on the guidance puppy trying to find a lot of really good information so please make sure if you haven't taken the time to look through that that you are doing that it is critical that you know where to find information for small you can see who your guidance counsellor is and how to get in touch with them along the right-hand side to find lots of really good information that pertains to civically to graduation but then also about College University applications visits from different liaison officers from the colleges and universities in for me most skilled trades and so on so please make sure you haven't had a chance or you haven't taken advantage of by what's on that page please make sure that you do do some research so that you know what's available also on the guidance website create a tab for college and university application information you'll notice the videos that we've created so you can share those with your family and you can review what we've talked about underneath that you're going to see a number files that you guys can open there's a clickable file that I'm going to get into in a minute about applying to college one for University and there's also going to be a post-secondary financial planning resource where you there as well and under that there's some information that supplied by the colleges and universities that we felt was really good resource so again going back to that guidance webpage is always a great idea make sure that you shall not to your family and that you're using those resources French department is created at University application information page and its digital it's going to be shared on our website and you guys will also have it emailed to you for sharing this with you because we feel like this is a really great resource and it he's kind of a One-Stop shop for you to go through for information but also there's clickable file so that you can go directly to some of the the best websites and the most important links the first thing I want to say that is that in order to apply to any Ontario unit you will have had to have earned or expect to earn before the end of the school year at least six grade 12 for you or for M courses again you must have a minimum of six in order to apply to University if you don't have that please make sure that you're seeing your guidance counsellor as soon as possible to make it guidance appointment and put that in the reason for the appointment because that is certainly going to be an important thing to get as soon as possible please note that in order to apply to University there is a $156 fee that's an increase of $6 from last year and that's for your initial three program choices so even if you're only going to apply to two you are paying 156 because that's for those initial three choices for each additional program Choice Beyond those three there's an additional $50 fee per Choice there are some supplemental program fees cover the cost of a via individual faculties are charging those fees so please make sure that you're aware of those as well and we are going to show you some resources as to how to know whether or not that's the case but $156 is that initial fee confer reprogram Beyond those three you need to spend another $50 per choice instead of pin numbers which is something we've needed to have in the past for students to create an account and apply to University no longer having to do that step instead you're going to use your Ontario education number what's referred to as the oen number you have access to this all the time you've always had it but most of you it's just never really paid much attention to that it's always in top of every report card that you've received the status sheet that I talked about earlier it will also be on that so your oen number is something that you have access to all the time you do not need to come guidance department to get it and you do not need a PIN number anymore to apply to University to again that's a change from years past before applying make sure that your review videos and these PDF document to make sure that you know what you're doing they've really done a good job of updating that ouac website so I think that you're not going to have any problems at all but again we've created or or provided some Oreos and an application guide that I think you'll find there's some other really great research resources that we've provided again these are clickable files and links to different websites that we think are probably the most beneficial there's a comparison chart that we created your benefit if you want to use that there's also the Ontario universities info. See a website that is the greatest website for Ontario universities that I have found and we'll get into that again in a minute and then how to use your own why are your interior University info resource for researching universities that are University resource guide from Fall of 2023 and that's something again I'm going to get into in a minute and then also there's a link 2 hour of the presentations that are going to take place at our school by representatives from various universities in the first of which is October 21st and 22nd in Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre they're having the Ontario the first is fair where all of the University's will have booths and representatives as well as the beginning talks about things like ASAP so if that's something that you'd like to attend you're most welcome to do so and there is a way to register online a few other key dates specially for those of you in living in this area November 7th at Western University they're going to have a regional University fair so if you would like to go to the Toronto on your welcome to but if you'd like to go to one more Regional Fair this is happening at Western on the 7th there are some other places in Southwestern Ontario where they're going to be having you so if that date doesn't work for you you may be able to find one again in the Southwestern Ontario area between the sea 9th of November that works also there's a virtual information session being held on November 22nd from 5 to 7 p.m. so I think they've tried really hard to give you as many options as possible so that you can reach to the various schools and learn a little bit more about their programs I highly recommend that you do that going to the University's for a visit is critical as well but certainly going to some of these things and getting a feel for the different programs that are out there and comparing the school's is great idea the application centre is already open and ready to go if you know exactly what you want to do in the programs that you're applying to U can get that process started now but the application deadline for all students applying to an Ontario University is January 15th so that means that between now and January 15th you have to have completed your application keep in mind that also means that you have to pay the application in order for that application to be complete so write it down somewhere highlight it for yourself put it in your phone put it on the calendar at home but January 15th is the absolute last day to apply freak will consider patient for programs they will accept applications after that but in order to be at the front of the line so to speak you must have applied by January 15th especially for competitive programs it is Slide on purpose is there a simple slide and yet it does sometimes cause hard I can confusion 6 is a minimum number of for you or for M level courses that are needed to apply to an Ontario University soap keep that number in your mind you need a minimum of six now if you have more than six that's wonderful but they're going to take your top six and when I say that what I mean is if there are four prescribed courses things that you absolutely have to have soy in English maybe a couple of math courses or a science that they've said you have to have that there still two that are not named courses things that they prescribed those two to your next to highest great well you were a courses that they would include in that top six at the end of the day though it's critical to eat remember that number 6 that you need to have at least six grade 12 your am level credits in order to apply to 9 University for September of next year I'm pleased to report that the Ontario University application centre has updated its website and I think that you're going to find that it's very user-friendly and very intuitive when you're looking under the headings along the top planning for University fees are all the tabs that come up so whether that's how to create your account the deadlines how to apply information about the application fees applied 40 sap all of this is right here fingertips and it's just with the click of the mouse along with that time you're going to find her beside it undergrad applicants and that is you you are under graduation from University that's how I always remember it so you've not grow waited from University program yet so an undergrad program usually get you a bachelor of something Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Science that kind of think so you would be applying for an undergrad program so when you click on that tab you'll notice all these other tabs come up and other links oh applicant responsibilities how to videos links to the Ontario universities their Skies there's all kinds of great information right here just at the click of a mouse so one of the links in there was how to create your own ouac account so for you guys who are applying even if you have an older sibling the process might be slightly different like I said the pin number is not necessary any more things like that how do I do it this is a step-by-step in video so you actually can see and hear how to do it and then there's a video transcript as well if that's more useful to you and I believe that there's also like a PDF file that goes through add screen by screen what you need to do so the end of the day through this ouac website you can actually access all this information about how to do it and there's a helplines and there's a help centre as well again just one draw your attention to some of the links that are there so it's like how do I start how do I do my research what do I do in terms of the application process and so on so again just some really good length that I think will put your mind at ease that everything he is under control and that the information you need is available so I talked a lot about the application for the application really doesn't take that long in fact it it's you know probably one of the shortest parts of this whole process the longer actually doing the research and that's what's the part where at now is doing the research hopefully you've been doing the research for the last few years some of you started a long time ago and are very well-versed in different programs but some of you aren't things to change programs change requirements for those programs change and so definitely you want to make sure that you're doing research and selecting programs that are appropriate they're going to take you to wherever it is that you want to go in the future and whatever it is that you want to be doing so in order to do that research again on the interior University application centre they have a lot of good ideas about where to start Publications and resources and an application guide for you so one of if not the best Garces is the interior University info pages on their website and this on the interior University application centre they've actually provided a how-to guide about how to use that resource I am going to show that to you in a in a second or two but I just want you to be aware that there's actually a guide for how to use that right through the interior universities application Center website what's the best websites and probably my favourite is the interior universe info page it's the one that guidance counsellors to use because it has the most up-to-date information and it offers a lot of great stuff especially for students leaving high school going right into University program you're welcome to go to the these websites but I do find that are extremely dense because they are about all of their programs at the University whether that's graduate programs PHD programs there's just so much there that really is relevant to you at this time so if you focus on this website I think that you'll find it is kind of One Stop Shop for all the things that you're going to need across the top of this particular website you'll notice it says programs it also talks about the universe Eastham selves talked a little bit about these scholarships and then there's also information about the actual application process so again a great great website for you guys to be using the first part of it is that you browse the programs that are offered at the various school so I just use the example of if someone were applied to same nursing you're certainly welcome to browse by category but if you know the program that you're looking for you can simply type it in and then we find more information about that program so you noticed that now I have all of the nursing programs and all of the Ontario universities listed if I want to focus specifically on the universe see that's offering the program I can click on let's say for example University of Windsor and it's going to give me information about that particular University so they mentioned in the last line if I were to click on any of those units cease where it says University of Windsor for example it's going to pop up to this page where it shows me a lot of information about that particular University for example I can learn information about how they deal with offers of admission but they have tours and events available things about residents meal plans scholarships and many many other topics that you might be interested to know about that particular School when you go to the next tab it says requirements and that is critical that is why we're doing all this research now because you want to make sure that you have all of the University level credits that you need to hi to the program of your interest so in this case for this particular School remember not all schools are going to ask for the same things even though they're offering the same program so for the University of Windsor for nursing specifically I want English for you biology for you chemistry for you and then at least 1 grade 12 Math course it doesn't say which Math course so it might be. It might be a function or maybe even calculated that happens to be the highest math that you've taken notice that there's a minimum average of 65% required in English notice also there's a second minimum average of 70% that's required in chemistry and so it is very specific not only about why you have to take but what minimum grade you can have in order to apply we're just going to take a look at the nursing program the Western Fanshawe operative program just so that you can see the differences so we know what wins was looking for let's take a look at this one so the grade range is mid to high 80s for this program and that means again that this is guide it doesn't mean that they can give you a specific number but you can assume that you're going to need in the mid-to-high 80s to be competitive for this particular program now to go to the requirements for this Western fan-shot collaborative program from Windsor they're saying you need English biology and chemistry with a minimum of 65 again 65 does not mean you're going to get into the program 65 is just a minimum that unless you wow. They won't consider your application but notice the difference in the math they're not requiring a university-level grade 12 maths they're actually only requiring a great 11 a.m. or you level and with a minimum of 65 / again just to be considered if you don't meet that criteria but you do have a grade 12 University level Matt they've made it clear that that can be used instead with a minimum Mark of 65 take a look also I've had did the applicants must take the Casper test so this is a test outside of the high school we don't administer this test is all done through the University's they'll help you figure out how to do that and send you information. is good for you to know about it then there's going to be links for you to look at what is that Casper test what's involved how much does it cost for me to take that test Etc one of the other things that this website offers is a little bit of a Nation about scholarships so you can search in a number of different ways you can look by the university to look by the dollar range maybe the grade range but it certainly is worth having a look at because as we know free money is good money and scholarships are available to you so you need to be aware of as I mentioned earlier there's also an area where they talk about the application process there's videos talks about the deadlines how you go butterflying and lots of other information right here on as at the one-stop-shop website of the Ontario universities info page another fantastic resource that we made available to you in a PDF clickable file is something that guidance counsellors get through these guides dialogues where we go and actually listen to each University talk about their new programs or any changes they created a resource guide and we shared that with you because we really think it's a phenomenal free ticket information there's a really great quick reference chart that Tower we think that you guys would find useful and they changed it a bit it used to be more of a PDF file but now they have it so that they can continuously update it again really good thing you'll be able to quickly know which schools offer first-year residents automatically which ones will consider grade 11 marks which ones don't at cetera so again really great tool if you have Pacific questions and you want to compare universities so I'm just going to give you an example this quick compare tools so I put in as the category of residence and I wanted to know is residence guaranteed and then I wanted to compare all the universities in Ontario so down this list you can see which ones are saying yet they automatically allow or ensure that first-year students get residents and then some don't and some will say with conditions so just a quick guide especially when you're comparing send Mitch and that there's a lot of other great information on this dialog resource each individual University is listed and there's all kinds of information for you about that particular school and about their program contact information lots of great stuff so please have a look at this Resort especially if you have specific questions or you're comparing universities might be a great way to do that typically universities sadly is on officers or recruitment officers into the school's as representatives of their school and their programs to talk with students about what they have to offer and it gives the students an opportunity to ask questions during covid we weren't able have those in person visit so they went to a virtual model some schools are going to continue with those virtual opportunities but there are some schools quite quite a few actually who are still sending people into the school so we have organized different dates and time that. The schools are coming in so make sure that you have a look at when they're coming what time they're coming and that you come into the guidance office and sign up to be part of those presentations the reason for that is number one we want to the people are interested in this person coming in and number two we want to make sure that we have a room that's large enough for an area large enough for the number of people interested in speaking with this individual so I can you do need to sign up in advance to take part in these presentations so went over some of these important dates already so October there is the Ontario University fair in Toronto in November on the 7th at eastern district Regional Fair and on the 22nd there's a virtual information centre I also mention that January 15th is the application deadline if you want to apply to Ontario University but a new date that I hadn't mentioned yet is May 29th and that's the Slide by which you should expect to hear from University some universities offer early acceptance and some will do only acceptances in the spring depending on the program so it is a very stressful thing because some of you may find think I'm just some programs but not others or you hear that friends have gotten into some programs already and you haven't heard anything please don't be distressed by that do look up how the University's handle Admissions and when they offer you text back to get a response some do you like a third a third and a third throughout the year some will only do one response well into the spring so again you will hear it different times but I gave you can reach out to those individual universities if you're concerned June 3rd is the earliest date that the university might require a response and or a deposit so keep that in mind you aren't expected to pay for all the universes just yet but by June 3rd they may be looking for a deposit for residence I had to hold a spot for you and various ways so please keep that in mind you will need to have some money available for that June 3rd deadline so just one more advertisement for these various University bears I mentioned the university the regional Affairs the one at Western on November 7th but there's also others in Southwestern Ontario Windsor's is November 6th who has won on November 8th and on November 9th there's one in Saint Catherine so again if the one in London doesn't work out please take note of these other options that you can take advantage of so once you've done some research narrowed it down a little bit more and you you're really trying to decide where you want to go where you want to apply I highly recommend that you actually go and take part in some of the events and tours that are going on at the universe you are going to be spending a significant time at the site institution so you want to make sure it's the right fit for you you want to make sure that it's a part of Ontario that you want to be in that you're comfortable in and that you you kind of know what you're getting into as far as the space there and how it feels to you some you're going to choose universes that are very big you want that that big bustling atmosphere you might want to be downtown Toronto because of the type of program you want the kind of life you want to lead during University that's great but for some of you that is nightmare that's not for you so you want to make sure that the campus that you're choosing is going to be a good fit so I can tours and events are available when you go on to the university website so you can find it but the interior University information page is great you look at each school you'll notice that there are tours and events listed and you can go to that at anytime to get more information Danny research you've gone to the schools and you are doing the application make sure you're prepared to pay the fee at that time as well so that that completes the whole application submit the complete and correct information on your application you're going to pay the fee and make sure that you've met any University specific application deadline so if their self rental applications that are due any kind of portfolio that might be due for them. Kind of thing some of you may have an interview or an audition that you need to take care of to make sure that you had those things in mind also make sure that you're keeping that ouac user password any reference numbers that you get and so on completely confidential that is for your use and you want to ensure that no one else makes any unauthorized changes to that so again keeping your personal contact information up to date your application and I'm sure that if there are changes that you're letting people know on the OU AC website it's going to give you more information about what happens after you submit your application so when you should expect to hear from University bring some more information if you need to make any changes to your application or if you need to respond to an offer of admission and I'll see if you want to learn a little bit more about campus life so again taking a look at that website and taking advantage of all of the adoptions that they have would be a great idea there's also a page for undergraduate responses to an offer of admission so what does that mean what does it look like how do you accept it or decline that offer so your logging into your application there's a how to video so that you can look at how do I actually respond to an offer of admission accepting an offer of admission for one University does not affect the evaluation of your application for another one however you may only accept one offer at a time so we have to cancel your previous previously accepted offer before you can accept the next one so again there's no problem if you're still waiting to hear from that number one school if you vape opted an offer from one University and you're waiting once you hear from the other university there would be an opportunity to select and again all of this is online ouac on the interior University of the Ocean Center website for you to look at any time I mentioned that there is a video how to guide when you're talking about responding to that offer of admission how do you do it make sure you've done it correctly it's all there for you on that website so this is our final slide on your road toward admission to University we are definitely here for you but this is also your responsibility we are giving you the tools I know you have two smart and the ability now you need to take the time to do the research to do what you need to do to ensure that you are picking the best program and the best possible school we look forward to meeting you at your individual appointment with some good questions so please you've done some research before that appointment have a great day
