Welcome to our presentation for all students currently in Grade 9 heading into grade 10 for 2023 students need to know that your course planner is open now and you're my blueprint space and will continue to be open until February 21st of this year so students need to select and submit their course elections no later than February 21st this presentation is focussing on the course options for grade 10 and also looking at those compulsory credits are required courses for grade 10 your individual pathway plan is the plan that you have Beyond high school so we want to make sure course selection reflect that pathway plan so what do you want to become what is your plan for achieving your goals we want you to be keeping those things in mind as we pick horses the biggest differences moving from Gray 9 2 grade 10 this year is that Grade 9 has been dstream meaning that students all took things that the same level very much like as if they were all open level courses now we're asking students to choose in grade 10 whether they want to take some Dark Horse said the applied level four at the academic level who require little teacher intervention they're often confident learner's able to problem solve and develop their own steps accomplish your goal is often we find a plaid Learners need more examples they like to have things laid out more step-by-step and they all stood tend to be a little less confident in their abilities in a given subject area so it really is going to be the utmost importance to review your skills are learning style and also to talk with your teacher and your parents about what they consider to be the right level for you moving into Gray doctor that's going to play a part in you determining whether you want to go in to apply to our academic courses would be to look at your learning skills and to consider your ability your attitude and motivation your organizational skills how independent learner you how well you work as a team or as a team member and what your learning style is to all of these things really come into play so it would be good to review past report cards rate 78 and first semester of Grade 9 when thinking about moving into academic or applied forces for grade 10 Spanish students will ask well what can I do if I am in academic what can I do if I'm in a plaid and the there's a lot of flexibility however those students who are considering college and university often tend to take those academic level courses students who are academic but often applied course for students will also going to the college level thanks for the locally-developed level often head toward work and or college and there are stepping stones that can lead from locally-developed courses into those College programs and students to take open course so a lot of our elected open level those are for all you don't have to choose between academic applied however English math Science and many other courses special those core courses you may have to choose why we're having this conversation now so you can start thinking about what is your destination and what are you going to need in the future I'm giving this example of course planner just so that you can see Yvette in grade 10 you can take a combination of applied and academic courses so those that end with a d r academic those that end with a p are applied so you can see that we go from Grade 9 you see all of the courses at you or similar course as to what you would have taken that are at the D stream level then this person has picked their bedtime courses and you can see that there's a combination of academic applied and open level courses moving into grade 11 and then integrate 12 this student has actually headed more toward those university-level courses but when they are in grade 10 you can see that they took a combination the point of this slide is to show you that depending on where your strengths are you made to take apply because that really is the appropriate level for you in that particular subject area however moving forward depending on what you choose to do Beyond High School having take that combination isn't necessarily A Bad Thing heading toward let's a university in this case at the end if you look at the grade 12 courses you'll notice they are all you and M level credits so this individual did ultimately decide they probably wanted to head to University so again the point is just to show but you can still take a combination of things when you're in grade 10 even if you're not a hundred percent sure but your destination is going to be the one key area those English if you are thinking of heading to University and you're not percent sure I strongly recommend that you make sure that you're taking Eng 2D which is grade 10 academic English that will lead you to the three you English and then ultimately that leads to the four English and you must have a for you English if you intend to go to an Ontario University so those literacy skills are very important and making sure that you're staying in that academic English could be very important if you are contemplating going to universe at some point so that's just a quick look at what time table or timetable planning could look like as you move forward don't forget to take a look at the Ontario CA your school diploma requirements before you can graduate from high school you need to have earned 30 new credits 40 hours of community service and you have to pass the provincial literacy test keep in mind that on my BLU you can go in and look at all those requirements and it will tell you how close you are to meeting those requirements so if you're taking a look at this particular slide you'll notice that you have to take English every year in that you need at least three math credits science do and so on so after Grade 9 you will have one credit in a lot of these things already and you'll be required to take a number of them and my blueprint does a great job of outlining that in your core select area and also I in your high school diploma requirement area the Ministry of Education has expanded the Ontario secondary school diploma requirements to include to mandatory online eLearning courses you can review the e-learning option it's on my blueprint or you can go to the ldcsb website and have a look at the different offerings please keep in mind that both summer school and our regular day school either courses would count toward this graduation requirement there is a way for families to request to be exempt from the mandatory learn or online learning graduation requirement of two credits in eLearning if you don't feel that that's right for for whatever reason they're learning style their learning skills props have an identification of some sort that really doesn't make e-learning the best fit for them absolutely parents can opt out from that mandatory to credit eLearning there's no rush to do this paperwork but you can't get in touch with the school and the guidance office and they can help walk you through that what guidance will be doing is when we meet with students in grade 12 if they haven't met that requirement then we would be sending him the paperwork to take care of that I should the parents want to make. Student exempt from that to credit responsibility in terms of compulsory courses for grade 10 you'll notice that there are several religion is required you'll see hre 20 the two represents a grade 10 course the O represents an open level English you can choose from academic applied or locally developed the same with Matt the same with science and history you can choose between academic and applied and for Greer's in Civics which is a required course it's a half-credit of each and both are open Levolor for everyone you don't have to choose between academic going into grade 10 are going to be required to take a grade 10 math in Grade 9 all Grade 9 students with the exception of those taking locally-developed math everyone took the same Math course moving into grade 10 you'll have to voice of choosing either academic math or applied math if you are a math minded person and you are looking to head to college or to University especially in those areas of science technology engineering math anything to do with health science business you may want to focus on those academic and University level math courses those of you heading to college apprenticeship for those who found that academic I told me that do streamed math to be challenging and or to be just right fit you may want to consider MFM to pee which is the applied math and as you'll see in the pathway chart it leads toward the college level math or there is a mixed math in grade 11 so for those of you who really aren't sure you want to take a look at the comment by your math teacher for those just entering math for semester to again you need to look back at historically how you've done in what your aptitude is did not subject area and also what your destination is After High School for those of you currently in math at the locally-developed level you'll know that there is also a locally-developed grade and that is the next rates for you in terms of elective courses there's a lot to choose from in grade 10 for those of you who did not take an art credit Grade 9 you should consider taking one in grade 10 as you do need to have in our credit before graduate from high school art credits include drama instrumental music guitar vocal music or Visual Arts and you don't need to have a Grade 9 prerequisite to take any of these great end open courses if you want to choose those make sure you're selecting the two we also have an academic French option we have a learning strategies grade 10 course that's a 20 under the guidance area we also have fuzzette does that is male phys-ed female office at and we still offer a hockey skills academy you did not take part in the hockey skills academy last year and would like to do so in grade 10 you're most welcome to do that keep in mind it to to credit program and I will be talking more about that later in terms of social sciences and Humanities there is a clothing or fashion horse that's optional HFN that's not true hnl 20 which is an open level course and we also have different Tech courses including communication technology construction green Industries and hospitality or food is what it's often known as so please consider your different elective options moving forward you do get slept two elective courses next year if you taking summer school or if you taken other specialized programs give you some of these that you've already earned that's okay you'll notice those show up in your my blueprint and you can select accordingly really enrolled in our extended French program for grade 10 make sure that you're selecting extended French for grade 10 and that you're also selecting the history course that's appropriate for the extended French program which is c h c to D the hockey skills academy Junior program is open to students in Grade 9 and 10 if you have already taken part in the hockey skills academy in Grade 9 you're not eligible to take it again because it is the same course however if you haven't taken it already and you'd like to you're welcome to sign up for it please keep in mind that this is a 2 credit program you get a healthy living and large group activity credit tal 20 and you also get a career since tax credit so again it's a to credit program that you're signing up for it's also a fee-based program it's a $500 fee to take part in this course and it requires a $150 deposit at the time of registering order to secure your place in the hockey skills academy there are three steps step number one going to go to our school website going to click under Athletics the hockey skills academy and you're going to fill out the online form to register the second step is to pay your $150 deposit on cash online and the last step is to make sure that in your myblueprint stays in your poor selection area that you are p a l 20 and CHD tlc200 it is a 2 credit program as a mansion and you want to make sure that you're still acting that hockey skills academy and those are the only three steps involved but we can't pretend there's a number of elective courses that you can choose from religious studies is not an elective course it is in fact a compulsory credit you notice that is open level there are a number of art credits if for some reason you haven't already taking an art Credit in Grapevine on our credit and grade 10 you will need to consider taking one in grade eleven remember that every student needs to have at least one art Credit in order to graduate from high school so that art could be in drama music guitar vocal music or visual art there's also business courses introduction to business BB I-20 now for some you can't take that same course again in great and you also have access to your history course which is a mandatory course you can do that at the academic level or the applied level we also have an extended French history so for those of you who are in the French program you'll be taking the extended French language course but you'll also be taking the extended French history at the academic level so please make sure that you are selecting CH c2dx if you're in that extended French Pro and those of you who have not already done so we'll be taking careers in Civics this year as well and you'll notice that chv20 other courses that are mandatory one including English so Eng 2D academic English and for those of you thinking about college but certainly those of you thinking University and g2d is going to be essential because eventually you need to take three you in order to take a for you anyone considering University all its to make sure they're in an academic English for grade 10 those of you who are considering college and or an apprenticeship Eng to pee is certainly the English that you want to look at you're not sure as a set you want to stay with that academic English as long as you're going to be successful in that English those who've taken locally-developed English for grade 9 will be moving forward at locally-developed level again for 10 and that would be e n g to L those of you continuing on with French have the option of taking that poor French FS f.2d those of you who are in the extended French program you'll be taking fef2 d that is the extent of French language course the other half of the Civics careers is the careers glc200 and I guess that's a half credit course and again to expand ettore if you have already taken it as part of your hockey Academy craps taking it in the summer for those of you who've already taken if is that you can select visit again you're allowed to take for that each year and multiple visits and Senior years but for those of you who haven't taken if his at all please keep in mind that you need at least one visit before you graduate from high school those of you who've done the hockey program in Grade 9 or for those who are considering it and pretend that does count as one for that credit math we discussed your choosing academic applied or locally developed math for science you will also be choosing academic applied or locally developed social sciences we have a fashion course and note that that is an open level there are a number of Technology courses that you can choose from in grade 10 there's a construction technology Hospitality which is our Foods class or a communication technology tgj 20 and there's also green Industries thj 20 these are more Hands-On courses for those of you who really enjoyed taking them in grade nine you'll note there's a grade 10 option and for those of you who've never to can one maybe there was no option for that particular Tech course in Grade 9 you're welcome to start at the grade 10 level you'll also know that there are a few grade 10 elearn options bt20 is an introduction to business c h c to D is academic history Eng 2D is academic English and ICS 200 is a computer programming or computer studies course keep in mind if you sign up for an easy learn course it is a fully online course taught by a teacher who is not necessarily teaching in our building and you will learn asynchronously meaning that the teacher is not teaching you in real time you will have assignments assigned to you on mine and you complete them and submit them online as I mentioned when you get to the st. Joe's website and go to departments go to guidance and that will lead you to the course calendar as well as other information including requirements for graduation different types of and so on when you're looking at a course code keep in mind that every part of it means something the beginning of it is the character that identifies the subject area so in this case the P represents health does that if you're looking at the number one meeting Grade 9 to mating meaning grade ten 3:11 and 4 grade 12 the old represents what level of course is offered at whether that's open academic applied or locally and the M sometimes there's a 6 character outlining that this is a specialty program or in this case because this is the phys-ed course this indicates that it's male phys-ed some of you may be interested in summer school course note that summer school courses Run for the whole month of July and you can only take one summer school course in the month of July you must be online each day so although you may be away from home at a cottage please make sure that you have a good Wi-Fi connection and that you do plan to be online every single day registration is now open for summer school you can apply through my blueprint or you can apply online to the ldcs website for summer school you have two options you can take a new credit so course that you have never taken before or you can improve your mark in a course that you have already successfully completed so can you must have already passed the course but if you're looking to increase your knowledge and grade and of course that you've already earned you can take just a two-week improvement credit at summer school new credit courses last for 4 weeks new this year in order to sign up for summer school or one of the options is to go on my blueprint so while you're picking your courses if you know that summer school is something that you're going to be selecting you can go to continuing education and explore the course available assuming that you want to pick a course you've never taken before you're going to select summer school new credit courses once you find the course that you're looking for you simply submit that course just as you did when you were selecting a course for grade 9 we ask that you choose to Alternative choices and that is so that as that we are scheduling the 800 plus students of the school if we're not able to give you one of your first choices we will to those alternate choices I in order to complete your timetable so please make sure that they are realistic choices and choices that you actually would enjoy taking skip the course registration process you need to also I'm sure that you paid your student fee of $40 through cash online keep in mind you must pay your student fee to take part in extracurricular activities attend school dances and so on thanks for your attention during his presentation if you do happen to have any questions you can always make a guidance appointment by going to the st.
