discourse planning video is for any student grade 11 who's heading into grade 12 next year and if they're graduating year hopefully we'll find this video not only helpful and picking your courses but also and doing some about post-secondary pathways what is the things that we always want to reiterate to students is that we want to focus on those future goals knowing that that's your choice and also that that's your responsibility certainly guidance another staffer here to help you along but we want to let you know that you need to take a lead role in selecting these different options and looking at the variety of toddlers that are available to you graduate from any Ontario High School students what's 30 credits have a minimum of 40 hours of community service logged and also passed the provincial literacy tests or have successfully earned a credit in the Ontario literacy course if you'd like to review Where You Are currently in terms of graduation requirements you can review that at any time in your myblueprint space Miss grade 11 year we really want to impress upon you how important your marks are some post-secondary institutions will look at grade 11 and 12 marks for entry into their programs all attempted courses in grade 11 and 12 are recorded on your transcript online courses in Grade 9 and 10 if you have failed a Course Grand Island 10 courses aren't recorded transcript if you have retaken the course however grade 11 and 12 marks whether you've passed or failed the course will be recorded on your transcript like it or not we're all probably heading to the same place at which is to the world of work and we want to make sure that you are best prepared for that particular pathway so whether that's an apprenticeship College University Ron to the world of work guidance wants to work with you and your family to make sure that you're getting to whatever destination is your goal some of you may be graduating next year but you may be contemplating a fifth-year and that's completely fine please keep in mind that our board has said that students can earn a maximum of 30 for credit we want to make sure your attendance is going to be consistent in that 50 year and that you have a commitment to an educational plan that might include upgrading coursework exploring new options or maybe going into Co-op so again to a maximum of 34 credits for students thinking that they're going to be leaving high school after grade 12 and heading directly into the world of work keep in mind that there's a lot of programs to help prepare you for that taking Co-op make some real work experience is a great option computer studies business courses any kind of tech course that might help you is also a great option make sure they're doing some research so that you know what's available to you in terms of your planning and in terms of Absecon there are some websites on this side that can help but certainly your guidance counsellors can help as well if an apprenticeship going into the trades of something that you contemplated please consider taking Cobb education and you made I want to register through your Co-op teacher for the interior youth apprenticeship program so that the hours that you work in a related field in Co-op can actually go toward your ear eventually and a ship there's no prerequisites to go in turn apprenticeship but they do often require very strong math communication and in some cases science skills all employers are responsible for hiring apprentices and there's lots of information on the websites that you can see on the slide here to help get started with that and again your Co-op teachers your guidance counsellors and even my blueprint can really help you pursue this option of apprenticeship and learn more about it as you enter into your grade 12 year it's super important that you do so and that doesn't mean just asking people that you know although that's a good resource it also means actually going into say you're my blueprint space or other spaces doing some questionnaires assessment to looking at lots of different internet sites guidance counsellor you may even want to start visiting campuses doing some job shadowing so you're actually following an employee around someday just to get a sense of what it is that they do at their job might be some part-time work that's available to help you you researched doing some volunteering doing Co-op taking part in our specialist High skills major programs or even doing a dual credit with Fanshawe College at our school in order to get some more information experience in a particular job another great option when you're doing your research is to go into your my blueprint space and do some of the surveys that are available there under who am I do you can really help you understand more about how you learn best personality and what you're likely to be successful in moving forward in this example it shows that this particular student has answered about their learning styles and they've learned that they're more of a kinesthetic learner After figuring out the type of Zone but this tune is their personality interest and so on it matches them up with certain jobs or career options that might be a good fit they're a student can actually click on any of these options to figure out what they need to do at a post Dairy level in order to get into one of those jobs are career options if you're pretty sure you know what you want to do after high school in terms of a pathway you can also go into your my blueprint space on the dashboard and look it up under post Dairy you can research using programs keyword searches and other filters available in my blueprint to find information out about different jobs in this case we put in different filters number one the students but if they'd like to go to university specifically in Ontario and they like to look into the area of every culture in this case the student typed in aviation in order to find out more information and just by typing in aviation they found State results of those 68 results you can see that each of the schools and programs that they have to offer related to that Aviation area come up and you can click on those to find more information click on that programs you'll notice that you can find information about the program itself the requirements and also a little bit more information about that post-secondary institutions you can also add it to your favourite and that stays recorded in your myblueprint stays so it's easier for you to get back to you later you can also dial this down further to actually figure out what you need from high school in order to get into that program and in just case you can see that you need a grade 12 English at the 4C or for you love and one of the following math courses whether that's the college math the University of functions math or university level calculus and functions another option is to look up an apprenticeship so depending on what sector you want to know more about you can simply click on that industry sector once you found a sector of Interest a bunch of different titles will show up depending on the area of interest in the skilled trades after clicking on the area of interest in this case construction Miller right you can see an overview and outline as well as any requirements there might be in order to become part of the soprano and again you can add this to your favourites or cheer filing my blueprint can you find information about the academics of your future plans but you can also see what the job outlook is or prospects to get a job in this area depending on the province that you're looking at if you're not really sure of your pathway but you have some idea of an area of interest you can also look under category so again you can see agriculture architecture business and many many more or you can simply click on that and it'll allow you to explore that Area Convention before that you can use this to search work or occupations again you can go under that search bar and actually filter it based on the four categories that you see here Career Cluster the outlook for a job what level of Education you need an estimated salary in this case this individual is looking for a job that's between 60 and $90,000 a year with a college diploma degree or certificate there's a good outlook for employment after graduation and it would be in the area of Health Science one of the options that came up from our search was dental hygienist so what are the future prospects like in Ontario Wicked three stars the other thing that they can tell us is the salary range and again it goes by Providence so you can see the depending on the province you're looking anywhere between $44,000 a year $87,000 a year once you find a program that's of interest you can look at the requirements and you can actually go in and look at different programs available in all of the different provinces and territories in Canada in this case Hunter dental hygienist lots of great information came up we had 55 results and you can go then and click on any of those to find out more information about that program so it is a great way to start from a general idea to me very specifically and then to figure out what you would need from that program or turn me to get into that program from high school there are lots of great websites but these are the two best in terms of planning for University or college. So please make note of those and make sure that you're referencing these before you do your course selection because as we've mentioned in the past once you submit your courses in February you're locked in and you won't be able to choose a different courses without the assistance if your guidance counsellor if you're thinking of heading to college after grade 12 keep in mind that prerequisite courses are required courses to vary greatly depending on the program but also on the school sometimes they're look four things that are non-academic so for example portfolios or auditions possibly interviews depending on the nature of the program College accept college-level University level and a more mix level courses and sometimes they will also accept old level courses but see courses are the main admission requirements please understand that whether your program choice is considered to be competitive or not we want you to do your very best but those competitive often require very high averages and often students aren't able to get in out of high school because of the nature of their entrance requirements so it's very important that you have a look at those requirements so that after great 12 you'll have what you need to get into the program of your choice in some cases programs at the colleges are referred to as highly competitive College programs these are programs where the number of qualified applicants well exceeds the four seats that are available in those cases you have to make sure that you've applied by the college application deadline which is typically February 1st of your grade 12 gear there's lots more information on the Ontario colleges website and on the individual websites as well you may want to consider another program as a backup because in some cases these highly competitive programs it's very challenging for high school students to get in and often they don't actually expect many high school kids to get in because of the nature of who else is applying for example students who've already come out of different University and college programs will be competing with high school students for those spaces so please keep in mind if your program is a highly competitive one you want to make sure you're making the best choice in your application after grade 12 and of course you need to be aware of that as you're approaching those courses in grade 12 going to college means that you have lots of different choices there are some short-term maybe one year certificate programs their diploma programs that typically lasts two to three years there also degree programs which require you to have university-level courses from great well there's also collaborative or joint degree ribs between colleges and universities where they work together to create a program we have graduate certificate programs co-op programs being that you can get work experience and generally speaking this is a paid opportunity at the college or university level and there's also apprenticeship programs that are offered at colleges in order to apply to an Ontario College you need to apply in February of your grade 12 here through the Ontario colleges. CA website this website is great not only for application information but also for information about individual colleges and their programs Cheerio colleges.com website is great in that it's kind of a one-stop-shop not only can you use it to apply but you can do a lot of your research there too it includes important dates application fees things of that nature but you can also find lots of information about the colleges and their programs and we definitely encourage you to do that on your way 312 slate your best prepared for whatever program you might want after you graduate in order to make use of the Ontario colleges website they do have their own videos but we're going to walk you through a couple of things that you might find interesting if I'm looking for a program I can simply type in a word or a program of interest to me and everything related to that in an Ontario College will pop up and I can select from those options once I found a pro interesting I've clicked on it I can get a lot of information but one of the most important things in our planning for grade 12 is looking at what those admission requirements are going to be for that post-secondary program admission requirements for this program include graduating from high school with your Ontario secondary school diploma an English at the college and university level a math at the college or university level in grade 12 Chemistry Grade 11 or 12 call Jay University as well as a physics grade 11 or 12 University or college level so as you can imagine knowing that you need these courses after graduating from grade 12 to get in. Really informs your decisions going into this course selection about what 2Pac for some of you you may be contemplating going to University after grade 12 please keep in mind that you need a minimum of six University or mix the Great horses so that means you have to have a minimum of six for you or for M courses in order to apply to any Ontario University it's really important that you do the research to make sure that you know what those courses have to be but regardless of the program that 6 is that is a requirement no matter what the program so again wanting to be informed and making sure that your course elections are in keeping with those requirements are really important my tooth that even though you might know what one University requires every University can require something different even if they offer the same program so please make sure that you're doing your due diligence and doing your research the Ontario Mercy application centre has a website that's useful as well as the Ontario universities info page if you're looking at the Ontario universities info page you'll notice that not only can you find programs but you can also look at the unit Steve's and what they have to offer as well as how to apply and look into information about financing your University opportunities as well Ontario universities info page also offers research checklist that we strongly recommend that you use to make sure that you are forward thinking about what you're going to need to do or what you're going to need to have in place before applying to University if you're doing your research you can Browse by category and once you've looked through the different categories you may have found a particular program of Interest once you've done that you can click on it or on the University named itself for example we've chosen a food and agriculture Business course the University of Guelph when you go to the overview you can see that it's at the University of Guelph you would get a degree with a bachelor of Commerce and at the grade range for this program is between 78 and 82% in that top six urm grade 12 courses looking specifically at the food and agriculture Business program at 12 we can also look at the requirements requirements for this program are functions math 1 additional for Yuma and three additional for you or M courses so they've laid out for you what courses are required then you can see that there are also three that are your church so that's your next top three for you or for M credits you can also look up the program admissions information and sometimes it's quite specific disclosures when they actually golfers and how they handle individual questions that you might have about admission there's also contact information for each University and you can get to their program website here as well Define highlights the fact that some have very specific policies about failed and repeated courses or courses that you've taken other than at a day school program so that's a summer school night school or maybe as a private school so if that's the case and you have taken some of those courses or you are planning to do that you want to make sure that you know that the school and program that you're applying to that this won't be a problem so I'm going to give you an example if you were to take say English in a summer school situation some schools do not look favorably on that not all in. Most but there are those who would prefer that you take that in a day school program by the same token some schools don't mind if you repeat of course and they would the highest of the two the two credits however some schools will only take your first attempt at a course so that's something to really keep in mind as you're entering into grade 12 there's also great information about the schools themselves so whether that's the school overview the program's admissions campus visits and times that you can go there information about the residences and meal plans scholarships and so to all of this can also be found on that interior University's info page so hopefully I've done a good job of giving you an introduction to how to use this website but there is a video that you can watch on their website about WhatsApp mobile and how to use the website so if you need a quick review please make sure that you do look at their video about how to use OU info so please make sure that you finish grade 11 strong not only is important that you earn good marks stick it into whatever post-secondary program you want because they may look at those grade 11 marks but it's important that you have the skills and the knowledge from those grade 11 courses in order to be equipped to do well in those grade 12 courses as we going to the next section we're going to talk about course selection specifically remember that your pathway is so important to keep in mind as you're selecting your courses you need to know how many credits in a certain are you might need or what prerequisite courses might be required okay onto our second half of the presentation where we're looking at actually planning our courses and going into my blueprint all students need to ensure that they've selected their courses submitted them no later than February 21st of this year wanted to Bunk I miss here that sometimes I hear from students so stressful time of why I'm taking at 12 12 M course because I think it's going to boost my chances of getting in even though I know I'm heading to college if you have the ability to do the university level courses or the am absolutely go for it but we certainly want your marks select your true ability so for students who are going into a college program that's requiring Eng foresee or for you but it's definitely for C is an option keep in mind that taking that you may not be to your advantage because they may not look at it any differently they really are just going to look at the Mark not necessarily the level so for example Sinclair College in in a 2018 version said that just taking it advanced level any old curriculum and courses taking at the college you or unlevel will be treated equally there will not be any grade differential what that means is the market the market matter what level you took so I'm bring this up only so that you are aware that if you are applying to a college program that the college English may be the one for you because your Mark will be higher in that level and it is an acceptable level to get into that program as I hope all of you are aware we have many different high schools major programs at our school 6 in fact and I'm hoping that some of you are already in bed if you've not already committed to being part of a high schools major we do hope that it's something that you will consider its four students going into every pathway whether that's an apprenticeship college-university or even into the world of work and the idea is to take bundling of different courses that are of interest that really showcase your talents and abilities and will lead you toward a specific sector destination After High School here's a look at the very specialist High skills major programs that we have here at Saint Joe's we have our agriculture High skills major our text Theodore Aviation which is a board Run High skills major but we have stew I have taken part in this each year St Joe's we also have our brand new business High skills major as well as the construction Health and Wellness and finally our hospitality and tourism major terrified in high school it's a bundling of courses which has to include at least two credits of co-op in a related sector certifications in training some experiential learning and career exploration options to reach ahead experiences as well as some activities that are delivered by our sector partners of the community to give you guys some experience in this area there is recognition for your requirements in the form of a special steel that will be can you also get certifications of different kinds depending on the high skills major that you've been part of are agriculture High skills major is led by mr. Fox and Miss is Obama and the focus here is not farming but on agriculture as a whole so it involves business technology engineering mechanics science all kinds of aspects and again reaches out to all Pathways whether you're headed to call University to the world of work or onto an apprenticeship arts and culture is another one of our high skills Majors with a musical theatre focus and it's not just about becoming an actor it's also people behind the scenes doing the technical things the sound lighting maybe construction of the sets at the event planning it's the amendment of it all so if that is of Interest maybe that's arts and culture might be a focus and this program is headed by Clark and mr. Kara Helios Slide by mr. Howard and for those of you who have any interest at all in going into a construction area weather that's going in Tuesday bricklaying or carpentry maybe it has to do more heavy equipment operation sheet metal working welding any of those kinds of things then this might be the high skills major for you and I encourage you to talk with your guidance counsellor or Mister Howard about this program our health and wellness program is led by this is my friend block and it's for anybody who is interested in Pharmacy health and wellness so anything from Kinesiology to being a doctor to being a fitness instructor to be a pharmacist may be a lab tech anything like that where we're dealing with people and health and their well-being so I can I encourage you to talk to mrs. lafromboise about this or your guidance counsellor our hospitality and tourism High School's major is led by Mr chera badi and it it opens up the door so like over 400 occupations tourism jobs all tend to provide lots of opportunity for advancement and so I'd encourage you to look at some of these options to watch mr. Share value or your guidance counsellor in this program again it's a bundling of courses including Co-op. The avionics program as I've mentioned before is run as a central program through the London District Catholic School Board but our students have an opportunity get involved in this as well the aviation and Aerospace industry has a lot of demand and lots of career options so whether you're looking at being more of an aircraft technician electrical radionics mechanic maybe you want pilot mechanical engineer maybe you're looking more at like an airport grounds crew or airport Administration whatever it might be a deviation might be for you keep in mind that one major credit that's required for this program is to be in alternate Jewel credit course with Fanshawe College to their Aviation program and your guidance counsellor would certainly help you organize this as well it's a great opportunity to try something different especially if you're thinking about an aviation program we're very excited to have a business High scales major and it is now in its second year the business sector is bursting with lots of opportunities whether that be for people who want to run their own business or individuals who want to learn more about the business industry encourage students if you're at all interested to look into the business High skills major again a bundling of courses and a co-op opportunity as well so how do you get involved in a high schools major in play quite simple you can make it guidance appointment but if you know that this is something that you want to do and you already have a lot of these courses then you can simply complete the registration form specific to that high skills may make sure it's all signed and you can return it to the guy and that's it I'd mentioned that Cooperative education is a must if you're going to be involved in a high skills major but call up is for everybody no matter what your eventual pathway is caught might be a great option it's a 2 credit program of school for the semester and you would actually get to go out and work for those for those credits and you can test drive a career you can have a look at different post-secondary options while you're working with Professionals in the in the field I kind of do some networking with them to determine if this is really a good fit for you and it can often lead to part-time employment as well and it also gives you an option for some Hands-On learning outside of a traditional classroom setting in order to you simply sign up for co-op during your course selection and then you would have a bit of an interview to call teacher to figure out what you're interested in there's a two-week pre-employment session at the beginning of the course where you do all of your doing and applications and then once you're out on your placement your back once a month to do some integration days in the classroom for the rest of the time you're actually out getting hands-on experience not only is called a great option for high school's Majors do but if you're thinking of going into a trade or doing an apprenticeship of some sort the interior youth apprenticeship program is a great option because you can use your Co-op hours toward your eventual apprenticeship hours so speak to a teacher if you're interested that works your guidance counsellor on there's also a couple of specialty Co-op placements as well there's a military Co-op Navy cop and there's Partnerships and experiential learning program to this tell program is for students often university-bound that are looking to get involved in research whether that be at a university setting or it's some sort of Institute and it's promoting science technology engineering math or medicine but not only those on there can be other areas as well so please talk to a cop teacher if this is something that you think you might want to get involved in or obviously your guidance counsellor for those of you specifically looking at the pre health science or the health and wellness High skills major VSCO SMC forum is something that you will need to take if you want to be in that type of your planet's graduate with that health and wellness High skills major as a senior student you have the opportunity to sign up to be part of this Council as well it's a to credit program so you would take gpp 30 as well as tg4m in his full program so you are devoting a lot of free time to get involved with your student council they do so many history of the school so if this is a leadership opportunity that's for you please note that you need to be a senior student in good attendance with a minimum of 75% average this year in your in your marks and there's a 250-word paper detailing why you'd like to be part of the student council that needs to be submitted I'm not sure if the deadline for that but more information will be coming soon and generally speaking they take about 16 students but that just depends on the year you are thinking of taking on a leadership role great way to do that and you can also look into credits there are a number of e-learning courses that are available for you you can find those under the discipline in my blueprint please change year-to-year but again you can go into my blueprint and see what those e-learning courses are for next year please keep in mind that these courses are not supervized in real time by a teacher you'll be working independently using your own device at the school or possibly at home so please make sure that you had a discussion out with your family and also think about your learning style and whether and he learned class is best for you a separate area has a pathway chart but we're going to bring to light the math pathway chart here because it's important as you're moving into grade 12 to know which the senior Math credits have any that you need to be taking if you're heading into college is very much appropriate if you're heading to University however you may want to consider taking one University math or in some cases you may need two or more University golf course so it is very important that you play and with that end goal in mind and should you need to take those math course you know which ones they are going to be required to take calculus mcv4u please note that you also need to have taken functions before 2 calculus so in many cases you plan to take both functions and calculus in grade 12 functions would be in semester 1 and calculus being semester to so again it's important when you're planning to take a look at those requirements and make sure that you're making good choices in your car selection in terms of your options for religion in grade 12 you have an open religion option as well as a forums that's been mixed college-university stream but there's also a philosophy which is a 4 U University level credit there's a number of different course options that you have for grade 12 so this slide outline some of them as will the next please note the level of the course that you're going to be taking and please also note the area that you can find it when you go into my blueprint in grade 11 physical opens up into two different types of his that we have more of us ports are games based phys-ed which is the PPL 30 or there's Personal Fitness which is paf 30 so please make sure that you choose the phys-ed that you particularly want to take really love is that and you want to continue with that physical education keep in mind that you could choose both Pas and PPL in grade 11 in terms of math there's a university math a mixed college math as well as a workplace in terms of science we have University level biology college-level biology University level chemistry and University Physics in terms of social sciences we have a number of options ocean is one option parenting there's the college level introduction to the social sciences or the university level introduction to the social sciences many of you have heard this referred to as the sap course I'm short for geology anthropology and psychology there are a number of tech options that are available to you even if you've never taken a technological studies course you're welcome to start at the grade 11 level there's construction Tech Hospitality which is also often referred to as our Foods program communication technology the green Industries program is also an option for grade 11 and again even if you've never taken the staff or there is no prerequisite for the great 7 course I mentioned he learning earlier in our slide presentation and here is a list of those eLearning options for grade 11 again so here's a snapshot of the st. Joe's Catholic High School web page where you can find the course calendar with the description of each course as well as things like the requirements for graduation two types of courses as well as that horse planner if you're interested in taking of summer school please apply through my blueprint by going to continue his education you're able to take a new credit course of course you've never taken before and that will be for the full month of July or you can choose to take an improvement credit for a so you've already passed and that's a two-week program all courses will be delivered fully online asynchronously and registration is open now well you will still be able to sign up for summer school through the ALDC recipe website an easier way to do it is to go to your my blueprint space go into continuing education and explore the course options so there are two options for selecting of course you may choose to UVA Credit that you've already been successful in or you may choose a new credit course once you found the course that you're looking for you simply hit submit course and that's all there is to it you will signed up to take a summer school course next year be sure that you haven't picked out course in your myblueprint course selection area if you are intending to take it in summer school as in other years we ask that you choose to Alternative choices in the event that we cannot give you the option of courses that you want the two alternate courses are used in their place by the time most of you get to great wealth you will have her 24 credits that allows you to take six or more credits to graduate and grade 12 those of you who plan to take a spare please keep in mind that you must have at least 24 credits and be in a position to graduate so against you may have already earned 24 credits meeting you only need to take six more credits in order to graduate which potentially could allow you to have a study. In each semester if you are going to take a study.
