hi welcome to the st. Joseph Catholic High School course selection presentation for students in grade 10 we're going into grade 11 my blueprint is now open for students to submit their course selections for next year that Christina will remain open until February 21st so students need to have selected their courses review their courses and then submitted them no later than February 21st we want to be sure that your course selection reflects your pathway plan what is it that you want to become and what is your plan after graduating from high school these are key things to keep in mind as you pick your courses reflection grade 10 going into grade 11 is really critical because it's at this point that you're choosing between college and university level courses in addition you're able to enter into a specialist High skills major program you have the opportunity of taking Co-op courses other really exciting opportunities that you may not have had leading into your grade 9 10 years when we change from grade 10 integrate 11 we're now not selecting academic and apply but rather we're choosing University and College horses if you've taken academic in grade 10 and you want to continue in that stream the course will often have a urm ending so for example if you take an English 2D and you want to continue on to for the University level or college-level then you're going to want to pick eng3 you that's a great 11 University level credit for those of you who've taken mostly applied courses you busy looking at taking college-level moving into grade 11 those courses that you've taken it the locally-developed level that might be English math or science you may be looking to take an Essentials level course when you're in grade 11 and those courses that are open will still remain for all so you're not selecting University College or an essential level for those courses as in other years we strongly suggest that you take a look at your learning skills to consider whether or not you want to take University of college-level courses in order to earn an Ontario secondary school diploma you need to ensure that you have 30 credits many of those credits are required you need to have 40 hours community service and you need to make sure that you've passed the provincial literacy test or they've taken the Ontario literacy course this year because of covid-19 students did not write the grade 10 literacy test. something that the ministry is going to be addressing I will be letting all students know what to what they need to know about moving forward into grade 11 with regards to that literacy requirement the Ministry of Education has expanded the Ontario high school diploma requirements to include to mandatory online eLearning courses you can review the e-learning options on my blueprint or you can go to the ldcsb website and have a look at the offerings please keep in mind that both summer school and our regular day school he learn courses would count toward this graduation requirement there is a way for families to request to be exempt Indiana mandatory learn our online learning graduation requirement of two credits in eLearning if you don't feel that that's right for your student for whatever reason they're learning style their learning skills practice have an identification of some that really doesn't make e-learning a best fit for them then absolutely parents can opt out or be exempt from that mandatory to credit eLearning there's no rush to do this paperwork but you can't get in touch with the school and the guidance office they can help walk you through that what guidance will be doing is when we meet with students in grade 12 if they haven't met that requirement then we would be sending him the paperwork to take care of that I should the parents want to make. Student exempt from that to Credit One possibility for many of you heading into those senior grade support to keep in mind what your options are when you're done high school and I know that not all of you know what you're going to do but in terms of keeping those options open and to the Future here are some great websites that you might want to go to the Ontario universities info website is for students looking at going or potentially going to University after grade 12 it outlines programs as well as required courses to into those programs the Ontario colleges website is similar all of the Ontario colleges are represented their information about the college's is there as well as all of their programs and requirements and your print space offers a great opportunity to look at but it also allows you to look at different University and College Programs as well so please take a look at those resources before you select your courses to make sure that you're making the best choice as possible here's a look at the interior unit info page and again you can find programs here you can choose universities take a look at what they have to offer and also you can learn how to apply and how to finance your University education the Ontario colleges website is a grey place to learn how to apply to college as well as to learn more about the individual colleges in Ontario as well as the different programs that they have to offer and the pre required courses from high school in order to enter those programs when you going to your mom's Prince Faisal be taken to your dashboard and you'll notice that not only can you go to your high school plan to pick your courses but there's lots of additional information about post-secondary planning and career planning as well The Specialist High skills major program is an exciting program that we offer at St Joe's as an opportunity for students moving into their senior grades it's a great way for students to take a bundle of courses get some Ashley's training they can match their skills interests and different talents as they're working toward their Ontario secondary school diploma no matter what your destination is After High School whether it's off to the world of work and apprenticeship college or university all students going into 11 and 12 had the opportunity to sign up for a high school's major program we're fortunate here at st. Joe's to have a number of different Specialists High School major program options for students we have a green industry fan art culture Aviation a brand new business High School's major as well as a construction High skills major health and wellness and also hospitality and tourism High skills major are five different components involved in learning or high skills major the first one probably the most important is a bundling of courses so these are not additional courses on top of the 30 credits that you need to graduate these are within those 30 your go to select from a certain grouping of courses and make sure that it's related to that high scales major and all likelihood you're going to be picking those anyway then you also get special certifications and training there's experiential learning opportunities cereja had experiences in terms of post-secondary and different Pathways and also others experiences and training with some Community Partners getting some really authentic opportunities that relate specifically to you my skills major to complete the requirements of their secondary school diploma as well as the special High School major component will receive a special seal on their diploma indicating which of the high skills major state part of want to give a brief description of each of our high skills may just because it is such an important program to consider joining leaving grade 10 and going into grade 11 agriculture is one and certainly in our area is a very viable option students can get involved but it's not just looking at farming there's lots of different areas in terms of science technology math Finance engineering mechanics and so on so if you're interested in looking into this one please have a talk with mr. Foxy's early teacher or talk with one of the guidance counsellors there's a bundling of 9 courses involved as well as a co-op experience being two of those our arts and culture is Major focus is on musical theatre but it's not just for those of you thinking of becoming a actors or performers is also for those looking at getting involved in the choreography maybe it's an event coordination maybe it's an audio visual production management of Stage Sound lighting props whatever it might be that would all be part of arts and culture so again there's a bundling of credits which does include a co-op experience and some other credit you'll need to earn anybody interested in the skilled trades should really consider getting involved in our construction specialist High skills major lots of different careers in construction and the skilled trades in general so that could be anything from looking at being a cabinet maker a carpenter and Millwright gas fitter a mechanic a roofer all of these are things that you can explore in our construction High skills major to get it's a bundling of courses including a coop and experiential learning opportunities and mr. Howard is our construction specialist High skills major specialist to get involved in our health and wellness specials High School's major cave come from all different area are the interest and all different post-secondary destinations so anything from Kinesiology to being a fitness instructor at dentist a doctor maybe you want to be a lab technician or a paramedic a massage therapist all of these can under that high skills major so please consider this as an option as speak to miss his laugh for a while if you're looking for some more detailed information or to your guidance counsellor hospitality and tourism High skills major opens the door 2 / 4 different occupations in this area and again it's a bundling of course is certainly including our hospitality and tourism course allow you to have those experiential learning opportunities and explore things within this industry and sector the London District Catholic School Board offers a high school's major in aviation so it's a centralized program through the board but certainly St Joseph Catholic High School students can take this program this opens the door to a lot of different high-demand occupations include aircraft technician flight engineer Air Traffic Control Landing airport grounds crew and so on if you're thinking of being part of anything to do with Aviation this would be an excellent program keep in mind what are the major credits that you have to do is credit program with Fanshawe College and the guidance counsellor work hand-in-hand with you to make sure that you get all of those required courses we're very excited to have a business High skills major and is now in its second year the business sector is bursting with lots of opportunities whether that be for people who want to run their own business or individuals who want to learn more about the business industry itself so I want to encourage students if you're at all interested to look into the business scales major again a bundling of courses and a co-op opportunity as well so how do you get involved in a high skills major you can make an appoint with your guidance counsellor to go over the program requirements but all you need complete the registration form specific to your high skills major and return it to the guidance office it's as simple as that Cooperative education is an exponential learning opportunity we are actually out working for all all afternoon in a given semester in your earning to high school credits to test drive a career as well as help you make post-secondary plans because you get to work with professionals and network with them to get a real sense of what this job site is all about and it can also lead to part-time or full-time work for you the real key for a lot of students is the opportunity to have a hands-on experience so if that's the way you learn best call it might be a great option for you also keep in mind we talked about that part of the high school's major you must have at least two credits of co-op in order to graduate with a high skills major in order to get involved in, all you need to do is Select co-op in your myblueprint face that will represent two spots in course planning when you sign up for co-op you'll eventually meet your Co-op teacher talked about what you might want to do every student goes through two week pre-employment session and you may need to do an interview in order to secure your position once you go out onto your placement you will be back once a month for integration classes or you're doing sort of the academic work of the co-op program and then the rest of the time you're out in the placement living the cob dream there's some special option I'm with regards to co-op for those of you and a high skills major you will need to be in a sector-specific co-op if you're thinking of becoming an apprentice the interior youth apprenticeship program is a great opportunity for you to use the hours of your high school Co-op in order to fulfill the hours of your eventual apprenticeship do you need to talk to your Co-op teacher to let them know that you are thinking about a potential apprenticeship After High School there's some specialized programs as well military Co-op Navy Co-op and partner inexperienced learning or the pal program to help program is typically for those looking to get involved in research whether that be at the University or Research Institute sometimes that might involve science technology engineering math or medicine if it does necessarily have to do if you have an interest especially those of you heading off to University going to talk to the cop teacher about what this opportunity might involve I highly recommend that you speak with them for those of you heading into grade 11 and 12 you have the opportunity to sign up to be part of our student council student council involves two credits in the past it has been the gpp 30 course as well as a yearbook course. and that will be the case next year as well so you will learn to credits by joining the student council it is a full-year commitment for all senior students you must have good attendance a minimum of a 75% average in your current and you may be required to write a 250-word paper detailing why you want to be on St Joe's student council typically to take a max number of 16 students but that depends on the year are going to be available soon for you looking at getting involved in the student council but I would highly recommend you speaking to this year's student council or reaching out to our student council staff leader who is Mrs hitting for those of you who they like the flexibility of online learning we do have some options for grade 11 students for this year so you'll notice that there are a number of e-learning courses keep in mind that you were responsible for staying on top of this work and that these courses run by a teacher within the London District have a school board but not necessarily a teacher here in our building so if you are interested in these elearn purses please make sure you look them up under be learned in my blood pressure what are the subject where's that I want to draw your attention to it this time is the math pathway and the reason that I bring that to your attention is there are a number of different math courses that you can select from moving into grade 11 depending on your pathway university-bound you may choose to take mcr3u you may choose to take them cf3m 2/3 of a sort of a magic math if you will or mixed math and that's a combination of both University and college level Matt there's also a call level Math course and for those of you who've Taken part in the locally developed math in the junior grade your next step would be to take Em el3e which is the essentials or workplace level 3 said it want to bring up Matt is that you need to cut half look at the end goal if you are considering going to University and especially if you're looking at getting involved in anything to do with science technology engineering math business things like that you may we need to look at the highest levels of math that includes the functions math mhf4u as well as calculus and that means that in order to take those to you have to take mcr3u and grade 11 that's why it's so important that you're doing some research now try to determine what where do I think I'm heading what's my pathway because that's going to determine what course should take in grade 11 and math is just one of those examples I also mentioned the three and that you'll note that for those of you who are pretty strong laugh but you're not interested in taking a three-year or heading into those for you math necessarily in grade 12 you may want to take the option of the 3M because it is a mixed and so you could eventually headed to the college math grade 12 or you may choose to take data management mdm4u and grey 12 so it's really important that you contemplate your future when you're picking which third math you're going to be taking in grade eleven and it is essential and mandatory in fact that you do take a third math in high school starting in grade 11 for the first time there is an open religion but there is also a 3M religion and meaning that it's a combined or mixed University College level program if you are thinking of heading University then certainly considering that 3M might be an option if you're going to college though 3M is still a great option for you in terms of options for grade 11 all students will be fire to take an English and math as well as a religion course but beyond that there are lots and lots of options so please make sure that you look carefully at all the different disciplines are subject areas please note that if you have already taken an Arts Credit now would be the time to do so you would be required to take a grade 10 art course if you haven't already taken an Arts Credit so know that there are other options for business accounting entrepreneurship marketing information communication technology and so on there's also a grade 11 University of university college mixed law as an available option we have several computer studies it's available for grade 11 as well as Co-op keep in mind if you are signing up for cop that is a 2 credit program and you are responsible to make sure that you can get to and from your placement each day of first semester you happen to have co-op you're choosing University College or the workplace level English if you have carried on with French and grade 10 have the option of taking the university level grade 11 French in grade 11 physical opens up two different types of his that we have more of us ports are games based phys-ed which is the PPL 30 or there's Personal Fitness which is paf 30 so please make sure that you're choosing the phys-ed that you particularly want to take if you really love is that and you want to continue with that physical education keep in mind that you could choose both Pas and PPL in grade 11 in terms of math there's a university math mixed math a college math as well as a work in terms of science we have University level biology college-level biology University level chemistry and University Physics in terms of social sciences we have a number of options fashion is one option parenting there's the college level introduction to the social sciences or the university level introduction to the social sciences many of you have heard this referred to as the sap course I'm sure sociology anthropology and psychology there are a number of tech options that are available to you and if you've never taken a technological studies course you're welcome to start at the grade 11 level there's construction Tech Hospitality which is also often referred to as our Foods program communication technology the green Industries program is also an option for grade 11 and again even if you've never taken these before there is no prerequisites grade 11 course I mentioned eLearning earlier in our slide presentation and here is a list of those eLearning options for grade 11 again as I mentioned if you have questions or your end about what a particular course might be you can always go to our st. Joe's Catholic High School website under department and look at the course calendar under the guidance page you can also find other important information on this guidance page as well including requirements for Malaysian different types of courses and also course planner education planning tools this slide helps to decode a course code so when you're looking at a course code it's made up of a number of different sections the first section I bet helps you to understand the curriculum area so in this case it's a p and that shows that it is a health and physical education course the second part the one shows what grade it is so one day 94 being 12. represents the level that the course is offered at so in this case it's an open level and the M the sixth character doesn't exist for all course codes but in this case it does because it's a specialized course code so in this case that represents whether it's male or female some of you may be interested in taking us summer school course so students who are behind a credit who may not have been successful in one of their previous credit or were students who want to reach ahead school is an option it is for the whole month of July and these are online only courses keep in mind that while you're not doing this in real time or synchronous learning with your teacher you are expected to be online everyday their improvement course so for students who passed a course but would like to revisit that course and potentially get a higher Mark those Improvement courses will be available in some cases but for those of you looking to start a new course those will certainly be available as well new this year signing up for summer school can be done through my blueprint some students may be interested in taking a summer school course what's the benefit of a summer school course some students like to get their feet wet with a grade program before they actually begin High School other students went to reach ahead so they have an extra elective or Choice course many of our students do choose to take summer school but this is certainly not something that students have to do keep in mind that summer school runs the month of July so Monday to Friday and it is a completely online asynchronous learning experience if you are interested in signing up you can do so through your my blueprints you would click on continuing education you explore courses you're going to click summer school new credit courses and finally selected course that you actually want to take and click submit well you will still be able to sign up for summer through the ldcsb website an easier way to do it is to go to your my blueprint space go into continuing education and explore the course options so there are two options for selecting of course you may choose to improve credit that you've already been successful in or you may choose a new credit course when she found the course that you're looking for you simply hit submit course and that's there is to it you will be signed up to take summer school course next year be sure that you haven't picked out course in your myblueprint course selection area if you are intending to take it in summer school I see another year we ask that you choose to Alternative choices in the event that we cannot give you the option of courses that you want the two alternate courses are used in their place hopefully this presentation help to answer any of the questions that you might have about the upcoming course election.
