thanks for joining me for this presentation my name is Jennifer Boyden on the department head of guidance at st. Joseph High School in St Thomas for those of you registering from a public elementary school and transitioning to St Joe's high school in the fall this presentation is mainly for you trying to make sure that you have all the information that you need about our programs are policies and all of the different procedures that we have for registration so hopefully I find this useful can always reach the school anytime should you have any questions Monday January 15th marks the date of our open house this is a really great opportunity to see what St Joe's is all about so I want to encourage all of you to come to the it's an opportunity to see all of the experiences and unique programs that our school has to offer we also showcase our Athletics and clubs we have lots of student volunteers there as well as the staff to discuss anything that you might have questions about we start at 6 or doors will be opening at 5:30 but we start at 6 in the cafeteria with a brief presentation and then we invite students and families to explore the school and take part in some fun tivities that really showcase what it means to be part of our school Community as we lovingly refer to it as our Bramley so I invite you all to come parents families bring siblings because we really do want everybody in your home Community to know what they have to look forward to I want to highlight all the different supports that we have available to our students at St Joe's it's not just the teacher is there to support the students there's a pool group of individuals that are there to assist so whether it's the administration principal vice principal we also have social workers guidance counsellors nurses pst's and Student Success our teachers as well as the chaplain all there to help provide your student with any concerns or challenges that day may be facing in high school we're really fortunate at St Joe's to have a number of special High School major program opportunities for students so as you can see we have agriculture with a focus on green Industries arts and culture that has a focus on Tech data Aviation which is run more CL fourth of all of our students can take advantage of that particular program we also have a business construction health and wellness hospitality and new this year we're adding a sports I still Spader there are a lot of benefits to being part of a high skills major program part of that is that you can customize your school experience to really speak to your own interests and talents you gain sector recognized certifications for free you can develop those essential skills and good work habits and you can also identify an Explorer and refine your own career goals it's a very flexible program every pathway is represented so whether you're heading to the world of work in a press University or college everyone regardless of what their final pathway is going to be your their post-secondary pathway After High School you can all take part in a high school's major program the Journey Begins document is something that the lemon District have school board has produced to help families as they're transitioning a student from grade 8 into a high school setting and it's a wonderful document to really highlight all the things that we're going to talk about or what we we started to talk about today so your team is grad requirements the types of courses decoding a course code and also it talks about your individual pathway planning so I highly highly recommend if you haven't already looked at this that job that you explore it it's something that maybe your grade 8th come with you and show you because it really is a great document it's available on the board website and it's also available through the st. Joe's website does Humira mean no this was our first year where all students in Grade 9 took courses at the same level and they're referring to this as be streamed meaning that much like a grade a classroom have to select between applied academic the only exception to this would be those students who are not working at grade level and maybe taking certain courses at the locally developed level I'm going to get into that a little bit more in the future slides so all students in grade eyes blue and grey and I will be taking the same of courses what's the reason for this what's the rationale the ministry's decided that they want to ensure that all students have a similar experience in Grade 9 and that they have the same opportunities and then it allows for more flexibility when they pick their grade 10 courses we do continue to offer and will continue to offer locally-developed courses in these courses were developed for students who aren't currently working at grade level we offer these courses in Math and Science in Grade 9 and their designated with an L at the end of that course code how do you know if this is appropriate one again your student probably is not working grade levels so there's been modifications their current course work so school teams so you're current elementary school team so working closely with the classroom teacher working with learning services and looking at the recommendation that and modifications that are recommended on the students iepr very key here so these can courses will continue to be offered in 20 22 23 and beyond for those students again who may not be working quite at grade 8 level at this point now those students who are able to meet grade level by the time they're at the end of Grade 9 can then choose to move forward either with locally-developed courses again or they may be able to have a conversation about moving into those D streamed courses but again that's not a conversation that we would have well into that Grade 9 year looks like those courses that are designated do streamed for all students take the same level they also have open level courses in many of these would be things like our elective courses in the Arts phys-ed business studies tactics like that you'll see an O at the end of the course code there open open to all your not decide between an academic or an applied level for any of these courses so the question is how does the streaming impact school to community Pathways program students essentially it doesn't because they will continue to be braided into all Grade 9 courses wherever that's appropriate I'm extremely excited to announce that stjoes will be offering a full French immersion program starting September of 24 so all current students who are in French immersion at Monsignor Morrison and all students who took French immersion at Saint Anne's up to the end of grade 7 are also eligible to take our French immersion program starting this coming September so current students taking extended French that will continue for them all students coming in start great. Next year will take French immersion and those students will be expected to take 10 courses that's the big difference between the programs extended French doesn't require as many courses French immersion will require that students take 10 in total so again we're really excited to be offering this I know our school Community has really been asking for this so excited to be able to offer it starting next year I mentioned in the last 5 that are a number of courses that would be taking in order to fulfill the requirements of the full French immersion program in Grade 9 they would take French geography and religion in French language in grade 10 they would take French history as well as careers in French language and then in grade 11 and 12 they would take both French and religion and french-language so for a total of 10 courses throughout high school that they would take in French language hockey skills academy is a very popular Junior program with our grade 9 and 10 students you can take the course in Grade 9 or grade 10 but students are not allowed to take it in both ears as it is the same course credit would be picky p a l 20 as well as the careers and Civics for this combined program students will learn to credits this is a fee-based program and it's $500 to take part in this program one $50 is due at the time of registration and I would strongly recommend registering as soon as possible as we have had this program fill in the past when students are registered for school and they've paid their $150 deposit a $350 that remains has to be paid before the program begins in September so there's a few steps involved step number one is you have to go to our school website and you're going to fill out the registration then Step 2 is you're going to do $150 deposit through cash online and step three is that you're going to go into your my blueprint never said you're going to pick pl20 and the careers in Civics option a major change to the Ontario secondary school diploma requirements is that the ministry is now mandating that all students coming in starting coming September when they come into Grade 9 they will need to have a mandatory Technology Credit in Grade 9 or 10 in order to graduate our school has selected that the mandatory credit take place in Gray 90 in our program suits are going to have an opportunity to test out or try out two different types of Technology we're going to combine our construction technology with green Industries so for half of a semester they're going to take cancer the other half will take green Industries the other option is they would take a combination of the hospitality and tourism which is also called our Foods class and a communication pack course where they're working with video editing videography recording that type of thing and technology-based horses very Hands-On very creative and a real opportunity to try something different again this is a mandatory course they do have to take either Tas 10g which is our construction Tack and green Industries combination or t as10f which is the foods and communicate technology program is due it is a mandatory thing for all students across Ontario our school has decided to make this a mandatory Grade 9 credit and again I will be going over this with students when I go out to visit but I certainly want make you aware that this is going to be a choice that your student will have to select one quick note on you might be thinking well if my student is going to sign up to take the hockey Academy they already have two course but they have to take they'll have to take the mandatory pal course as well as cruising Civics so they won't have room for that Tech course absolutely true what will happen is all students are in the hockey Academy they will wait and take their man. technology course when they're in grade 10 so they will not be missing anything because in their hockey program they already are taking the mandatory careers and Civics which technically is a grade 10 course so they will already have that done they will simply replace that with the technology course that they didn't take from Grade 9 so they're certainly not at any disadvantage it's just basically we've reversed the order in which they'll do those courses mention there's a number of core is that are required for all students to take and you can see those on the slide in front of you religion English Math and Science as well as geography and French are all mandatory subjects should a student choose to take it at the locally developed level don't make sure that the end of the code and in an L which indicates that locally developed the rest of the students will be taking those dstream courses and typically they end in W for students who are planning to take French immersion they know to note that a fi F 1D is the course code for French immersion that will be clear in my blueprint for those taking their core French again French has a mandatory course it is FSF 1D the rest of the students will take who are not in the immersion program and finally one of the mandatory courses is that mandatory Grade 9 technology course and as I mentioned they'll have the choice between either taking Tas 10g which is a focus on green Industries in construction or they'll take T as10f and the focus there would be on food and communication technology so those are the seven mandatory courses that Grade 9 students will be select in my blueprint have a great night student will have one optional course to choose from there are a number of things that are required in order for a student to get their entire secondary school diploma one of them is that at some Wayne High School did you have to take an art credit they would also have to take one physic credit it's not necessary that they do both in Grade 9 in fact if they wanted to take a phys-ed credit later on even integrate 11 and 12. Is that Define and they would do that with their appropriate age level so for example if they took grade 11 physics said they would do that with great 11 Sivan if they hadn't taken if his head before many students however you want to take that throughout high school so that is the their first race they can certainly pick that in Grade 9 they would simply select male or female is that in terms of the Arts credits as they mentioned they have to have one to graduate from high school we have a number of different credits that would count toward that credit drama is one Visual Arts o drawing painting sculpting type art of instrumental music vocal music which is singing and guitar all of those would count as an Arts Credit we also have it busy credit bp20 called launching and leading a business that could be an option for a grade 9 student and they're also courses that are called learning strategies courses these courses literally focus on strategies for Learning and help students who may feel that they would be from a little bit more focus on learning and on doing a bit of homework with a teacher present so it's a good opportunity especially if your student happen to have an individual education plan this may be a course that there when to use in place of the mandatory French credit so that's something that the learning services or SPS T's at the elementary school or their teacher and grade eight may discuss with them students with IEPs are also welcome to take the learning strategies course the code for that is gls10 the other optional program course the hockey program and I did mention that previous light that would count as two of their courses in Grade 9 they choose to take that program so these are the courses that they get to slack from their allowed to select one of these out of their eight courses in terms of your start guidance webpage is really good at helping to answer a lot of questions that you might have so while you and your family are trying to make decisions about horses and opportunities the guidance page is really good place to go in case you're looking for me information you take some time to investigate the Journey Begins document you'll note that they have this fancy decoding a course code image there just want to quickly go through it with you so that you understand the significance of course code so that when you're looking at the grade 9 courses it makes some sense to you especially if you're looking on my blueprint and you're also looking at other grades so in this case they've taken a phys-ed course and looked at the very first character usually identified what's up. So in this case and then the rest of that course codes PPL designates what kind of us is that it is the one designated it's a Grade 9 course so it was a two it would be a great time free for grade 11 or 12 the next digit the next part of the code represents what level it is so you'll notice for grade 9 courses you have the option of having the D which designate academic w4d streamed L4 locally developed and then over those open courses and then the final character which often doesn't exist and they're not all 6-digit sometimes there's only a 5-digit code escape the M represents that it is a male phys-ed so you'll notice that there's a few other times when that six-character might come into play but generally it's it's not there it's usually a 5-digit course code must be taking K coded courses of these are courses that are not for credit then again you're going to notice that there's a difference in their coding the first letter means that it's an alternate or non credit-bearing course the next to me letters refer to what they're studying in this case literacy the sea in this case so that 4th digit or sorry the third letter refers to the year and in this case the year would be the third you're so a is first-year B is the second see you as the third and so on so hopefully that helps clear up what a course code why why it looks the way it does and what it means in trying to make sense of all the different courses that you have available not just for grade 9 but beyond we have a course calendar and that's available to you guys all the time on our school website it's also available to you through your my blueprints space do-si-do registering with us from a non ldcsb school or those coming from a public school wanting to register can go on our ldcsb website or you can go on the st. Joe's website in both cases you notice a large Circle in the right hand side it says register and you can simply click on that button to get the process started you're going to want to click on secondary registration even though your students currently in elementary school they're heading to secondary so that's the registration that you want to complete at that point you're going to see a link to the online registration form you're also going to see at the bottom I mentioned earlier in the slide presentation the Journey Begins document where it gets a lot of information about our school board about high school and things about the interior Secondary School diplomas if you wanted to read that that's also available there but you will click on this link in order to get to the registration you'll need to set up an account in order to complete that registrations that the next thing that you going to see there is a student fee for all students are registering at St Joe's each year the student fee is $50. $50 for those registering from a grade eight school also includes their lock fee the student fee. is $50 in order to pay that student fee you're going to go to school cash online and that's through our school website so I've showed you the website address there once you get there you'll notice under Pro and services simply click on school cash once you click on school cashed there's a lot of instructions it's literally step-by-step instructions about how to go about setting up your account and paying for that particular student fee what are two main things that you need to do in order to register from a non ldcsb or from a public elementary school going into St Joe's you want to make sure that you've completed both of these steps by February to tonight because at that point we start the whole scheduling process so it isn't so much that if a student moves into the area or something or decides to come to San Jose that you have absolutely can't put in order for your student and their course elections to be in clue in our original scheduling we need to have them register by February 29th so step one is to do the registration online and to submit all the documentation to Lori Barry in the guidance office and step two is to make sure that you paid that student fee you've done those two things and everything is completed someone from the guidance office or from Administration the vice principal may get in touch with you to let you know that everything's in order and to give you an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have as you may already be aware they just does have a uniform policy and please students are expected to be in uniform each day while they're attending school so that's tops and bottoms we don't have specific Footwear things like that but tops and bottoms are to be provided by DJ and killed her that is our new uniform provider we are no longer in contract with McCarthy you'll know that I put the link here on this slide but you can also go to our school website to find more information about the uniform students to be in uniform every day I said there are a couple of days throughout the month when students are allowed to dress down should they choose to do so and one of those days is often a paid dress down meaning that they are being encouraged to bring a tuna in and that money goes to a local once again I just want to put in an advertisement that are open houses Monday January 15th some of you may be seeing this after-the-fact but hopefully if you if this is after the fact you've already been to our open house and if you're seeing this before the open house I really do hope that you'll join us because it really does showcase all the great opportunities and exciting things that your students have to look forward to when they join us next year at st.
