Decoding a Course Code

How to decode an credit bearing course.

The first letter identifies the curriculum area.

B = Business Studies​ ​K = Alternative (non-credit)
C = Canadian & World Studies​ ​L = Classical and International Languages
E = English​ ​M = Mathematics
F = French as a Second Language​ ​P = Health and Physical Education
G = Guidance and Career Education​ ​S = Science
​H = Social Sciences and Humanities ​T = Technological Education

The first three digits (always letters) identify the subject

If the course is credit bearing the fourth digit is always a number.

2 = Grade 10​ ​4 = Grade 12
 

The fifth digit is always a letter and identifies the course "type".

  • D = Academic
  • L = Locally Developed
  • P = Applied
  • O = Open
 

Grades 11 & 12

  • C = College Prep
  • M = University/College Prep
  • U = University Prep
  • E = Workplace Prep
  • O = Open

Some courses codes have a sixth digit.

It can be a number or letter and is used to distinguish course characteristics.

How to decode an Alternative (non-credit) course.

The first digit is a 'K' and indicates an alternative course.
