hi welcome to the st. Joseph Catholic High School course selection presentation for students in grade 10 we're going into grade 11 my blueprint is now open for students to submit their course selections for next year that Christina will remain open until February 21st so students need to have selected their courses review their courses and then submitted them no later than February 21st we want to be sure that your course selection reflects your pathway plan what is it that you want to become and what is your plan after graduating from high school these are key things to keep in mind as you pick your courses reflection grade 10 going into grade 11 is really critical because it's at this point that you're choosing between college and university level courses in addition you're able to enter into a specialist High skills major program you have the opportunity of taking Co-op courses other really exciting opportunities that you may not have had leading into your grade 9 10 years when we change from grade 10 integrate 11 we're now not selecting academic and apply but rather we're choosing University and College horses if you've taken academic in grade 10 and you want to continue in that stream the course will often have a urm ending so for example if you take an English 2D and you want to continue on to for the University level or college-level then you're going to want to pick eng3 you that's a great 11 University level credit for those of you who've taken mostly applied courses you busy looking at taking college-level moving into grade 11 those courses that you've taken it the locally-developed level that might be English math or science you may be looking to take an Essentials level course when you're in grade 11 and those courses that are open will still remain for all so you're not selecting University College or an essential level for those courses as in other years we strongly suggest that you take a look at your learning skills to consider whether or not you want to take University of college-level courses in order to get your Ontario secondary school diploma all students have to fulfil certain criteria number one he has over and at least 30 credits to have to have at least 40 hours of community service log number 3 the last requirement is the newest requirement students are required to take to fully online learning courses vegetation has expanded the Ontario secondary school diploma requirements to include to mandatory online eLearning courses you can review the e-learning options on my blueprint or you can go to the ldcs be website and have a look at the different offerings please keep in mind that both summer school and our regular day school he learn courses would count toward this graduation requirement there is a way for families to request to be exempt from the mandatory learn or online learning graduation requirement of two credits in eLearning if you don't feel that that's right for your students for whatever reason their learning style there's scales props have an identification of some sort that really doesn't make e-learning a best fit for them then absolutely parents can opt out or be exempt from that mandatory to credit eLearning there's no rush to do this paperwork but you can't get in touch with the school in the guidance office and they can help walk you through that what guidance will be doing is when we meet with students in grade 12 if they haven't met that requirement then we would be sending home the paperwork to take care of that I should the parents want to make. student exempt from that to credit responsibility for many heading into those senior grade symport keep in mind what your options are at when you're done high school and I know that not all of you know what you're going to do but in terms of keeping those options open and looking to the Future here is some great websites that you might want to go to dantera universities info website is for students looking at going or potentially going to University after grade 12 it outlines program as well as required courses to get into those programs the Ontario colleges website is similar all of the Ontario colleges are represented their information about the college's is there as well as all of their programs and requirements blueprint space offers a great opportunity to look at different careers but it also allows you to look at different University and College Programs as well so please take a look at those resources before you select your courses to make sure that you're making the best choices possible here's a look at the interior University's info page and again you can find programs here you can choose universities take a look at what they have to offer and also you can learn how to apply and how to finance your University education the Ontario colleges website is a great place to learn how to apply to college as well as to learn more about the individual colleges in Ontario as well as the different programs that they have to offer and the pre required courses from high school in order to enter programs when you going to your my blueprints pays to be taken to your dashboard and you'll notice that not only can you go to your high school plan to pick your courses but there's lots of additional information about post-secondary planning and career planning as well the special High skills major program is an exciting program that we offer at St Joe's as an opportunity for students moving into their senior grades it's a great way for us to to take a bundling of courses get some specialized training that can match their skills interests and different talents as they're working toward their Ontario secondary school diploma no matter what your destination is After High School whether it's off to the world of work and apprenticeship University all students going into grade 11 and 12 had the opportunity to sign up for a high school's major program very fortunate at st. Joe's to have a number of high school major programs agriculture High skills major an arts and culture High skills major with a focus on Tech theatre Aviation is one that is run centrally at the board office but it's available to our students and to all students in the London District have a school for high schools have a business High School major as well as a construction High skills major health and wellness hospitality and coming hopefully to our school next year will be a sports focussed special skills major program there are five different components involved in learning or high skills major the first one probably the most important is a bundling of course is to these are not additional courses on top of the 30 credits that you need to graduate these are within those 30 you're going to select from a certain grouping of courses and make sure that it's related to that high scales major and all likelihood you're going to be picking those anyway then you also get a special certification training experiential learning off tuna tees some reach had experiences in terms of post-secondary and different Pathways and also others experiences and training with some Community Partners getting some really authentic opportunities that relate pacifically to your high skills major to complete the requirements of their secondary school diploma as well as the special high-skilled major component will receive a special seal on their diploma indicating which of the heist Nature's cave Den part of want to give a brief description of each of our high skills may just because it is such an important program to consider joining leaving grade 10 and going into grade 11 agriculture is one and certainly in our area is a very viable and lots of students can get involved but it's not just looking at farming there's lots of different areas in terms of science technology math Finance engineering mechanics and so on so if you're interested in looking into this one please have a talk with mr. Fox he's our lead teacher or talked with one of the guidance counsellors there's a bundling of 9 courses involved as well as a co-op experience being two of those credits culture High School's major focus is on musical theatre but it's not just for those of you thinking of becoming a actors or performers is also for those looking at getting involved in the choreography maybe it's an event coordination made it's an audio visual visual production management of Stage Sound lighting props whatever it might be that would all be part of arts and culture so again there's a bundling of credits which does include a co-op experience and some other accreditations that you'll need to earn anybody interested in the skilled trades should really consider getting involved in our construction specialist High skills major lots of different careers in construction and the skilled trades in general that could be anything from looking at being a cabinet maker Carpenter and Millwright gas fitter a mechanic a roofer all of these are things that you can explore in our construction High skills major it again it's a bundling of courses including a call and other experiential learning opportunities and mr. Howard is our construction specialist High skills major specialist to get involved in our health and wellness can come from different areas of interest and all different post-secondary destinations so anything from Kinesiology to being a fitness instructor at dentist a doctor maybe you want to be a lab technician or a paramedic a massage therapist these can fall under that high skills major so please consider this as an option to speak to miss his life around 4 if you're looking for some more detailed information or to your guidance counsellor hospitality and tourism High skills major opens the door over 400 different occupations in this area and again it's a bundling of course is certainly including our hospitality and tourism course allow you to have those experiential learning opportunities and explore things within this industry in sector the London District Catholic School Board offers a high school's major in aviation so it's a centralized program through the board but certainly st. Joseph Catholic High School students can take this program this opens the door to a lot of different high demand. patients including aircraft technician flight engineer Air Traffic Control Landing airport grounds crew and so on if you're thinking of being part of anything to do with Aviation this would be an excellent program keep in mind that one of the major credits that you have to do is through dual credit program with Fanshawe College and a guidance counsellor work hand-in-hand with you to make sure that you get all of those required courses we're very excited to have a business Heist major and it is now in its second year the business sector is bursting with lots of opportunities whether that be for people who want to run their own business or individuals who want to learn more about the business industry itself so I want to encourage students if you're at all interested to look at the business High skills major again a bundling of courses and a co-op opportunity as well so how do you get involved in a high skills major you can make an appoint with your guidance counsellor to go over the program requirements all you need to do is complete the registration form specific to your high skills major and return it to the guidance office it's as simple as that Cooperative education is an experimental learning opportunity we are actually out working for all morning or all afternoon in a given semester in your earning to high school credits gives you a chance to test drive a career as well as help you make post-secondary plans because you get to work with professionals and network with them to get a real sense of what best job sectors all about and it can also lead to part-time or full-time work for you the real key for a lot of students is the opportunity to have a hands-on experience so that's the way you learn best call it might be a great option for you also keep in mind we talked about that if you're part of the high skills major you must have at least two credits of co-op in order to graduate with a high skills major in order to get involved in, all you need to do is Select co-op in your myblueprint space that will represent new spots in your course planning when you sign up for co-op you'll eventually meet your Co-op teacher talked about what you might want to do every student goes through two week pre-employment session and you may need to do an interview in order to secure your position once you go out to your replacement will be back once a month for integration classes where you're doing start the academic work of the co-op program and then the rest of the time you're out in the placement living the cop dream special options with regards to co-op for those of you and high skills major you will need to be in a sector-specific co-op if you're thinking of becoming an apprentice the interior youth apprenticeship program is a great opportunity for you to use the hours of your high in order to fulfill the hours of your eventual apprenticeship do you need to talk to your Co-op teacher to let them know that you are thinking about a potential apprenticeship After High School there's some specialized programs as well military Co-op Navy Co-op and partners in Experian to learning or the pal program until program is typically for those looking to get involved in research whether that be at the University or Research Institute sometimes that might involve science technology engineering math or Meadow it doesn't necessarily have to so if you have an interest especially those of you heading off to University going to talk to the cop teacher about what this opportunity might involve I highly recommend that you speak with them for those of you heading into grade 11 you have the opportunity to sign up to be part of our student council student council involves to Credit in the past it has been the gpp 30 course as well as a yearbook course. and that will be the case next year as well so you will learn to credit by joining the student council it is a full year commitment for all senior students you must have good attendance a minimum of a 75% average current year and you may be required to write a 250-word paper detailing why you want to be on St Joe's student council typically they take a max number of 16 students but that depends on the year are going to be a for those of you looking at getting involved in the student council but I would highly recommend you speaking to this your student council or reaching out to our student council staff leader who is Mrs hiddink other subject areas that I want to draw your attention to it this time is the mat pathway and the reason that I bring that to your attention is there are a number of different math courses that you can select from moving integrate 11 depending on your pathway University you may choose to take mcr3u you may choose to take them cf3m the three of them as sort of a magic math if you will or a mixed math and that's a combination of both the university and college level math so a college level Math course and for those of you who've taken part in the locally developed math in the junior grades your next step would be to take any l3e which is the essentials or workplace level 3 study want to bring up Matt is that you need look at the end goal if you are considering going to University and especially if you're looking at getting involved in anything to do with science technology engineering math business things like that you may we need to look at the highest math and that includes the functions math mhf4u as well as calculus and that means that in order to take those to you have to take mcr3u and grade 11 that's why it's so important that you're doing some research now to try to determine what where do I think I'm heading what's my pathway because that's going to determine what course you take in grade eleven and math is just one of those examples I also mentioned the 3 a.m. Matt you'll note that for those of you who are strong math students but you're not interested in taking a three-year or heading into those for you math necessarily in grade 12 you may want to take the option of the 3M because it is a mixed and so you could eventually heading to the college math grade 12 or you made is to take the data management mdm4u and grey 12 so it's really important that you contemplate your future when you're picking which third math you're going to be taking in grade eleven and it is essential and mandatory in fact that you do take a third High School starting in grade 11 for the first time there is an open religion but there is also a 3M religion and meaning that it's a combined or mixed University College level program if you are king of heading to University then certainly considering that 3M might be an option if you're going to college though 3M is still a great option for you in grade 11 there are only three courses English math and religion outside of that students have a lot of options so we're going to go through a few of those please note that in religion you have the option of taking it at the open level take it at the mix level if you are in the extended French program you'll need to take it at that mixed level at but you're taking the extended friend friend code so it would have is that on the end so just be cognizant that if you are in the extended French program do you want to make sure that you're taking the the one that ends in m said if you're looking to take an Arts Credit so for those of you who are going into grade 11 who've not yet successfully completed an Arts Credit please make sure that you do pick one and you will need take that at the grade 10 level when we talked about the Arts the discipline of Arts that includes drama and music and visual arts and even within music itself divided into instrumental music guitar so if you haven't taken at credit yet and you're going into grade 11 you really do need to consider taking that this coming year we also have a partnership marketing and information communication technology in terms of Canadian and world studies as a discipline we also have travel and tourism this is a horse that's been offered in the past but we did not run it this past year so I just wanted to highlight. And we also have Canadian law clu 3M which is a mix of college and university in the computer studies area students have the opportunity to take computer programming or computer science Cooperative education is also a truecredit options if you are going to take Co-op just know that that is two credits English you can take at the University of Louisville the college level or the workplace level we also are going to be offering contemporary voices called and it focussing on indigenous language and Indigenous studies so if you are interested in this language credit it is n v e 3 C or nbe tree you so depending on whether you want to take that. college level or the university level in terms of French options for grade 11 we have our core French so that is sort of the regular French or if you're in the extended French program you'd be taking fef3 you so again if you are just make sure that you're taking the one that's appropriate for your program in grade 11 there are a number of different health and physical education courses to choose from PA f30 where that be female or male this is personal Fitness so it really is I'm looking at your own individual Fitness and trying to improve your Fitness level you are doing activities as a group but those activities or things like working out cardio workout weight training yoga some running things like that so again you're doing it as a group but it really is more about your own personal fitness that we have PPL 30 which is more of a sports based or games based visit if that's something that you're into and then for the first time next year we're going to be off keep you said three see which is called health4life this course is a little bit different from the others while you are still physically moving your body it's about more about your overall health so that include mental health devote stretching on there maybe some yoga components to this and other other types of workouts so again it's of course that's just evolving it's new to our school so we're really looking forward to having students try this discourse out for grade 11 we also have a bunch of different math Ops mcr3u it's functions and cf3m is functions and applications and that's a mixed college and university math mbf3c is a college math and at any L-3 is workplace now earlier slide in order to graduate you do have to have a minimum of three math credits in high school so that is definitely something that you're going to want to take in grade 11 in terms of getting your interior secondary school diploma you really only have to take two Sciences you either need a third science or attack to fulfill that other requirement but many students do choose to continue their Science Education with a grade 11 science so you can choose from biology chemistry and physics all at the University level or in grade eleven you can also take College biology in terms of social science and Humanities we have a fashion class-h nz3c parenting which is HPC 30 and there are two different options there's a college level and a university level of what often is referred to as the ecology anthropology psychology course it's really an introduction to the social sciences we also have a number of technological studies courses construction Hospitality or as many kids college Foods class we have a yearbook class I swear you're literally making that the next year's yearbook we have communication technology a lot to do with videography using cameras video editing that sort of thing we also have a photography class which is exactly what you would expect it to be learning how to take a photo apps developed them and so on I have green Industries thj is the beginning of the green Industries there's a mixed University College a green Industries there's also in Essentials green Industries so in this case you're working in the greenhouse a lot your what plants learning about plant biology there are some aspects of landscape design to this as well so I want to encourage everybody to take a look at these different options as well and if you've never taken one before you do not need a Grade 9 or 10 Tech in order to start grade 11 so if you've never taken a communication technology and you'd like to you can start in grade 11 and that's the same with the other Tech areas for those of you who particularly like the flexibility of online learning we do have some options for Gradle and students for this year so you'll notice that there are a number of e-learning courses keep in mind that you were responsible for staying on top of this work and that these courses are run by a teacher within the London district school board but not necessarily the teacher here in our building so if you are interested in DC learn courses please make sure you look them up under be learned in my blueprint I mentioned that there are two mandatory he learns for all students move forward in order to graduate so if you're looking at taking a couple of fully online courses we do have a number of them I'm not going to go through the mall but as I mentioned in the previous slide they are all listed in my blueprint under the eave learn discipline so this offer some students Allah more flexibility in their time table but keep in mind that it is your responsibility to stay focus and to make sure that you're online each day attendance is taken regularly and students are expected to be progressing each day in those fully on find courses as I mentioned if you have questions or you're unsure about what a particular course might be you can always go to our st. Joe's Catholic High School website under department and look at the course calendar under the guidance page you can also find other important information on this guidance page as well including requirements for graduation different types of courses and also course planner education planning tools despite helps to decode of course code it's when you're looking at a course code it's made up of a number of different sections the first section of it helps you to understand the curriculum area so in this case it's a p and that shows that it is a health and physical education course the second part the shows what grade it is so one being 94 being 12 the O represents the level that of course is offered at so in this case it's an open level and the M the sixth character doesn't exist for all course codes but in this case it does because it's a specialized course code so in this case it represents whether it's male or female if you interested in reaching ahead taking a course that maybe you've never taken before or those of far behind in credits and need to take a summer school class in order to to get a credit that perhaps you didn't earn earlier there are online course options in my blueprint that you can choose for summer school keep in mind that it's a full month of July and that it is eonline I'm told that we are going to offer if you in class opportunities for learning in the summer however I believe that those are going to be in London so I will keep students posted on what's going to be available as far as in class but the majority of our courses are going to be a fully online and available in July keep in mind that you have to be online each day attendance is taken and there's a great deal of work that's done each day because in the month of July you are essentially doing for months worth of regular class work so if you can commit to that if you want to take a summer class just know that you can apply to that through my blueprint through the continuing education Tab and we are going to walk students through that when we do our course selection workshops with in February some students may be interested in taking a summer school course what's the benefit of a summer school course some students like to get their feet wet with a Grade 9 program before they actually begin High School other students went to reach ahead so they have an extra elective or Choice course many of our students do choose to take summer school but this is certainly not something that students have to do keep in mind that summer school runs the month of July so Monday to Friday and it is a completely online asynchronous learning experience if you are interested in signing up you can do so through your my blueprints face you would click on continuing education it explore courses click summer school new credit courses and finally selected course that you actually want to take and click submit well you will still be able to sign up for summer school through the ldcsb website easier way to do it is to go to your my blueprints bass go into continuing education and explore the course options you are signing up for a summer class just keep in mind that we are only offering new credit for so last year and the year before there were some improvement credits that were offered so if you had wanted to bump up your mark a little or improve your understanding and a certain subjects are you could take a two-week improvement course those are no longer going to be available so you go into your my blueprint space you go to continuing education and are exploring those courses you're going to be looking for summer school new credit courses when she found the course that you're looking for you simply hit submit course and that's all there is to it you will be signed up to take a summer school course next year be sure that you haven't picked that course in your myblueprint course selection area if you are intending to take it in summer school as another years we ask that you choose to Alternative choices in the event that we cannot give you the optional courses that you want the two alternate courses are used in their place hopefully this presentation has helped to answer any of the questions that you might have about the upcoming course election.
